Writing at his eponymous blog, Gareth J. Young offers insight into the nature of consciousness and some basic misconceptions about it. Mr. Young delves into the evolution of human understanding about consciousness, from the ancient Greeks to modern-day philosophers and scientists; he even brings quantum mechanics into the discussion.
Young posits the fascinating notion that consciousness is not a reflection of the physical brain, but may actually precede – or at least arise simultaneously with – the brain’s development.
Young speculates there may even be a universal consciousness which produced the Big Bang that created the physical universe.
Mr. Young admits that he holds no definitive answers as to the origin of consciousness. However, he makes a strong argument that consciousness transcends the mere dictionary definition of the word and he encourages all of us to explore the concept for ourselves.
