Despite the lack of concrete scientific evidence, those in the academic community still have an affinity to the paranormal or occult. Recently, a member of Cambridge University held an interdisciplinary session of the science community to approach rational thoughts on the paranormal. The meeting contained three basic subjects: pseudo-psychic phenomena, near-death experiences, and psychokinesis. While most of the science world including serious publications reject these subjects there is a famous contingent of physicists, psychologist, and cosmologists that regularly explore these paranormal topics.
Key Takeaways:
- An interdisciplinary conference in Cambridge brought together 50 scientists to discuss rational perspectives on the paranormal.
- Joseph Banks Rhine is seen as the father of parapsychology, a field that investigates telepathy, precognition, out-of-body experiences, and similar phenomena.
- One study in 2011 reported evidence for precognition, but scientists have not been able to replicate the results.
“Positive results are not unusual, but are rarely repeatable. Moreover, many seemingly weird phenomena have subsequently been explained by conventional science.”
