The author of the book “The End of Science,” John Horgan, explains how there may be no more large breakthroughs in scientific study. He talks about individual fields of science, like physics, neuroscience, and technology, and specific theories within these fields, like string theory, and the concept of multiple, parallel universes. He notes that today there are fewer “concrete” theories that are currently being studied, and more of what he calls “bunk.”
These bunk theories that he refers to don’t really have what he classifies as scientific merit. He rationalizes that science should not be focused on the nature or meaning of existence, because it’s so abstract and so difficult to define and study. Science should rather focus more on solving the current problems and issues that exist in modern society, because that is something that science can achieve, and will better humanity.
