Teachers face this situation every day, there is a kid in the class and they act in a way that is disruptive and inappropriate for a classroom setting. We’ve been primed to think that detention of such student is the best course of action, and we accept it as a traditional solution. Now, one school is challenging that notion and is implementing the practice of meditation in their classrooms. Despite a lot of skepticism with which this decision has been met, the results are very positive.
Key Takeaways:
- An elementary school in Baltimore encourages misbehaving students to go through meditation practices.
- The after-school program Holistic Me allows children up to Grade 5 to practice meditation and yoga.
- In the U.K., the Mindfulness in Schools Project teaches adults how to set up school programs.
“But in my memory, detention tended to involve staring at walls, bored out of my mind, trying to either surreptitiously talk to the kids around me without getting caught or trying to read a book. If it was designed to make me think about my actions, it didn’t really work. It just made everything feel stupid and unfair.”
